Huffman, Merkley Lead Bill to Get the Federal Government out of the Fossil Fuel Business

Rep. Jared Huffman
December 18, 2024

U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA) and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) today led the reintroduction of the "Keep It in the Ground Act" -- comprehensive legislation to stop new fossil fuel extraction on public lands and in public waters.

"The climate crisis is happening now. Communities across the country are already facing the effects of climate change, and it's critical we reduce emissions by keeping the remaining fossil fuels in the ground," Huffman said.

"This legislation is one of the most sensible steps the federal government can take to reduce emissions, protect the public, and avoid the most damaging impacts of climate change."

A long Island man is facing multiple counts of animal cruelty for allegedly keeping 11 dogs in a deplorable, urine-soaked home and exposing two of the pooches to cocaine, officials said Wednesday.

Christopher DiGiovanna, 42, was already in custody for a November 23 assault when Suffolk County police and Town of Brookhaven Animal Control and Code Enforcement executed a search warrant in his Centereach home and found the 11 malnourished pups.

Nearly all the dogs were found in a small bedroom on urine-and feces-soaked sheets, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.
The animals were underweight, flea-ridden, filthy and "covered in urine."
